When a child moves out of the home to study or start their own life, an empty room is often left behind – and with it, the opportunity to use the space in a completely new way.
There is no need to leave the child’s room as it was. Important memories and items can be kept even if the room is put to a new use. If there isn’t enough space to store everything at home, the extra items can be moved into storage.

In this guide, we will cover:– How to turn the room into a cozy guest room– How to update the child’s room for more adult use– How to create a peaceful reading or workspace– How to make space for hobbies and exercise– What to consider when storing a child’s belongings

1. Make it a cozy guest room

Convert the vacated room into a guest room for friends and relatives. A comfortable bed, good lighting, and peaceful decor make the room a place where guests can easily feel at home.

The room does not need to be large. When extra items are moved away, space is left for the essentials and the room feels more spacious.

2. Update the child’s room to a more adult style

Even though the child has moved out, they will likely still visit home. You can create a more adult version of the former room by keeping, for example, a few pieces of furniture, books, or other important items.

Extra items can be moved into storage, leaving the room with more possibilities for use.

3. Create a peaceful reading or workspace

Have you dreamed of your own quiet place for reading or working? An empty room provides a great opportunity for that.

A comfortable chair, good lighting, and a functional workstation can transform a former child’s bedroom into a library, reading room, or home office.

4. Make room for hobbies

When an entire room becomes available in the home, you also get space for hobbies. The room can be turned into, for example, a sewing or craft space, a music room, or another personal hobby area.

Design the space according to what you want to do there, and keep only the items you truly need.

5. Create your own relaxation space

An empty room can also be a place for relaxation. Make it a space where you can listen to music, watch movies, read, or otherwise spend quiet time.

The most important thing is that the room suits the needs of you and your family.

6. Turn the room into a gym space

An empty room is also well-suited for home exercise. With just a few pieces of equipment, a mat, and a mirror, you can create a functional space for exercise, stretching, or yoga.

Preserve memories without them filling the room

After a child moves out, many items are often left at home that have both practical and sentimental value. Go through the items together before anything is thrown away.

Important memories can be packed into boxes and stored for later use. If there isn’t enough space at home, a storage unit is an easy way to keep items without them taking up space from the new guest room, workspace, or hobby room.

Not enough space at home? Rent a storage unit

If there is no longer room for the child’s belongings at home, they do not need to be thrown away. In a Pelican storage unit, you can store, for example, furniture, moving boxes, books, and other items for as long as you need.

This way, you can put the vacated room to new use and the child’s important belongings remain safe.
