Here are five tips to help your parents declutter - and maybe even prepare for a potential move

As children move away from home and parents approach retirement age, the idea of moving to a smaller home often starts to cross their minds. If your parents have lived in the same house for 15-20 years, it may be time to help them go through the belongings that have accumulated over the years. This can be a big and emotional task, but with planning and a practical solution like a rental storage unit, the process can be both easier and more manageable.

Here are 5 tips to help your parents declutter - and maybe even prepare for a potential move.

1. Start boldly
Taking the first step can be difficult, as many things are linked to memories and history. Start by discussing the benefits of decluttering, and support your parents in making the decision. Remind them that the most important memories will remain, even though the home may be getting a makeover.

2. Make a plan
To avoid the process dragging on forever, it's a good idea to make a work plan. Set aside time, for example a week from your summer holidays, to go through your home in a systematic way. Assess which items can be disposed of and which will be kept. If you want to avoid cluttering up your own home, you can rent a storage space. A rented storage unit allows you to keep things that have sentimental value but are no longer needed in everyday life.

3. Start with the easy stuff
Start with the items that have the least sentimental value, such as kitchen utensils, towels and decorative items. Then move on to clothes, toys and other items that can be donated or stored. By breaking down the task into smaller pieces, it's easier for your parents to give up unnecessary items.

4. Use rental storage
If your parents live in Uusimaa or the Turku region, it is convenient to rent storage space. Moving is easier when you have suitable moving boxes, bubble wrap and tape. Remember to label all boxes clearly so that it's easy to find your belongings when you need them. Make efficient use of storage space by placing heavy boxes at the bottom and stacking them securely.

5. New freedom with storage space
Downsizing can be an emotional process, but in the long run your parents will appreciate the increased space and freedom. Items donated to charity or safely stored will bring clarity to everyday life and make any future move easier. With rental storage, your parents can easily store items they don't want to give up, while enjoying a more spacious and clearer home.
