Make the most of your storage space
A storage unit provides valuable extra space when your home becomes cluttered, or when you are moving or renovating. But how do you make the most of the space?
With a little planning, you can fit more items into the space and find your belongings more easily later. Here are 7 easy tips for organizing your storage unit.
7 tips for efficient use of storage space:
- Pack moving boxes carefully
- Label all boxes
- Disassemble furniture
- Plan the space before moving items in
- Utilize the height of the space
- Place heavy items at the bottom
- Leave an aisle in the space
1. Pack moving boxes carefully
Pack the boxes sufficiently full, but do not make them too heavy. Place heavy items at the bottom and light or fragile items on top.
Preferably use moving boxes of the same size. They are easier to stack, and you can utilize the height of the space more efficiently. At Pelican, you can find moving boxes and other packing supplies.
2. Label all boxes
Clearly write the contents on the side of each box. You can also indicate which room the items belong to, such as the kitchen, living room, or bedroom.
Clearly mark boxes containing glass and other fragile items. This makes both moving and later unpacking easier.
3. Disassemble furniture
Large furniture fills up the space quickly. Therefore, disassemble tables, beds, and other furniture whenever possible.
Collect screws and small parts in bags and attach them to the furniture in question. Always remember to pack and protect furniture, rugs, mattresses, and textiles in plastic covers to avoid them getting dirty and to ensure they stay in good condition during transport and storage.
4. Plan the space before moving items in
Think about how you want to use your storage space before you start moving items into it.
Items you rarely need can be placed at the back of the unit. Items needed frequently should be placed near the door.
A simple plan from the start saves you from moving many boxes later.
5. Utilize the height of the space
Storage space is not just about floor area. Utilize the height of the space as well.
Stack sturdy boxes on top of each other and store large items in an upright position when it makes sense. These could include mattresses, table tops, or other flat items.
This way, you free up floor space and get more out of your storage unit.
6. Place heavy items at the bottom
Start with the heaviest and sturdiest items. Place them at the bottom and put lighter boxes and fragile items on top of them.
This makes the stacks more stable and reduces the risk of boxes being crushed or falling over.
7. Leave an aisle in the space
It can be tempting to fill every centimeter, but remember to leave space so you can access your belongings.
Leave a narrow aisle in the space and place items you use often near the entrance.
This way, you won’t have to empty half of the storage unit the next time you’re looking for one specific box.
What can be stored in a storage unit?
A storage unit can be used to store many types of items for both short and long periods.
For example:
- Furniture
- Moving boxes
- Clothing and textiles
- Books
- Bicycles and sports equipment
- Seasonal gear
- Items from the basement and attic
The most important thing is that your items are packed and organized so that the space is utilized as well as possible.
Choose the right size storage unit
A larger space is not necessarily the best solution. When you pack and organize your items smartly, you can often manage with a smaller space than you initially thought.
